Hamel, Debra. 1998: Athenian Generals: Military Authority in
the Classical Period. Leiden.
|
I offer here corrigenda and addenda to my book,
Athenian Generals, whose full citation appears above. The page
(whether at this address or another in future) will serve as a lasting forum
for corrections and comments on the text, taking advantage of the extraordinary
opportunity provided by the web to offer readers immediate access to commentary
which otherwise would surely have remained unpublished scholia.
The date on which each comment was added or changed is appended to each entry. In addition, the date at which any (substantial) change was made to the site is
posted in the upper lefthand corner of this page, for the convenience of readers
who may have occasion to consult the site more than once. A guide to the
Greek transliteration scheme used may be found
here.

p. 16 n. 35:
At the end of the first sentence add: "(at least in the
years of the radical democracy: Ath. Pol. 26.1 reports that in the early fifth
century generals were inexperienced in warfare and were elected to office because
of their family reputations)" [8-10-98]
|
p. 16 n. 35:
Before "All of this is not to say..."
insert sentence: "See also Aristotle at 1277b, who suggests that one should
serve as a strategos only after having served under a strategos and as
a lochagos and taxiarch. [8-10-98]
|
pp. 24-28:
See now Matthew R. Christ," Conscription of Hoplites in Classical Athens," CQ 52.1 (2001). [5-3-02]
|
p. 40:
After "in the hands of Athens' generals"
add: "(cf. Dem. 4.33: a(\ me\n ou)=n xrh/setai kai\ po/te th=| duna/mei, para\ to\n
kairo\n o( tou/twn ku/rios katasta\s u(f' u(mw=n bouleu/setai...."
[8-10-98]
|
p. 41 n. 2:
After "over its generals' negotiations." add (within the
parentheses): "Against Andrewes's view, however, see Buck [1998], p.
40 n. 112, and Kagan [1987], p. 267 n. 85." And to the bibliography add: "Buck,

The Life of an Athenian Statesman. Stuttgart."
[10-19-98]
|
p. 45 n. 9:

|
p. 45 n. 15:

cf. p. 41 n. 2 above." [10-19-98]
|
p. 51 n. 36:
At the end of the note add: "For a comparable decree,
not necessarily Athenian, cf. Suda s.v. leiponautai. It is not clear what event that entry
refers to, however." [7-14-99]
|
p. 52 n. 42:
At the end of the note add: "Rosivach (1987), p.
246, suggests Thrasyllos had Alkibiades stoned because of a popular outcry
among his troops at Alkibiades' treasonous behavior." The
reference is to Vincent Rosivach. "Execution by Stoning in Athens." Cl. Ant.
6, 232-248. [8-10-98]
|
p. 60:
Correction: The fellow executed by Lamachos was the eldest brother of Agoratos,
who was, as Lysias tells us, born a slave from slave parents (13.18 and 64, with 27).
Lys. 13.67, then, is not evidence for an Athenian general's treatment on campaign
of a citizen soldier. [2-11-99]
|
p. 62 n. 14:
Delete "and" before "Rhodes." After "Rhodes (1981),
pp. 683-684," add "and Parke (1933), p. 78." [1-26-99]
|
p. 63 n. 18:
At end of note add "For a discussion of the authority
of Greek generals (not only Athenian) over military discipline, see Nieto (1990)."
The reference is to F.J. Fernandez Nieto. 1990: "La competencia
penal de los estrategos." In Symposion 1988. Vortrage zur griechischen und hellenistischen
Rechtsgeschichte. Pp. 111-122. [5-17-99]
|
p. 63 n. 19:
Add "MacDowell (1962), p. 111."
The reference is to Douglas MacDowell.

|
p. 84:
After "correspondingly reduced" add note: "See
Lys. 26.11 for a similar comment about the collegiality of the boule."
[3-5-99]
|
p. 88:
Add a footnote before "I agree in the main...": "The
same passage suggests that Thrasyllos and his colleagues enjoyed equal authority.
Of the ten, the general Archestratos managed to procure for himself a particularly
well-furnished vessel for a campaign in the North. But his assignment to that trireme
was made only pollw=n loidoriw=n au)toi=s genome/nwn. Evidently, there was
no commander-in-chief making definitive decisions about such matters."
[3-5-99]

p. 101 and ff.:
Add apostrophe after "Athens" in chapter headings.
[8-10-98]
|
p. 117:
In his review of my book (The International History Review 21.3 (1999), p. 719) W.J. McCoy writes "Pace Hamel (p. 117), Lakedaimonios and his fellow strategoi disobeyed official orders at Kerkyra in 433/2 (Thuc. 1.45, 49.4-7)." True enough, the Athenian generals did in the end disobey the orders of the demos, and I ought perhaps to have made that clear. But the point does not affect my argument. What is striking about the incident is that the generals disobeyed, according to Thucydides' account, with the greatest reluctance. I write on p. 117: "...the careful attention which Lakedaimonios and his colleagues gave when in the field to following the instructions with which they had been dispatched to Corcyra in 433/2 suggests that generals did not lightly disregard the orders of their home government." This remains true despite that the generals eventually disobeyed orders.

p. 119 n. 10:
After the first sentence add: "Former soldiers
might also serve as dikasts at their general's euthyna: Dem. 4.47."
[8-10-98]
|
p. 120 n. 15:
After "Plato, Chrm. 153 b-c" add: "; cf.
Thphr. Char. 8.4" [8-10-98]
After "family and friends in Athens" add: "(cf.
Lys. 20.27)" [3-5-99]
W.J. McCoy is correct to point out in a review of my book (The International History Review 21.3 [1999], p. 719) that I have confused Thrasybouloi here. Alkibiades was not accused by Thrasyboulos of Steiria but by Thrasyboulos of Kollytos, who was not his colleague on this occasion. Thus the text "his colleague Thrasyboulos of Steiria (Plut. Alc. 36.1-4) and/or by" should be omitted from the note. [1-19-00]
|
